Mechanistic biology requires both detailed structures, which provide a chemical description of the complex macromolecules that perform the reactions and processes of Life, as well as a means of monitoring and capturing the processes themselves that are dynamic and may not be directly amenable to high-resolution imaging. By combining a suite of techniques including solution X-ray scattering, cryo-EM, fluorescence microscopy, spectroscopy, and solvent exchange methods we aim to integrate observations at all levels of the structural hierarchy. This complementary approach can bring the dynamic processes of the virus life cycle into clearer focus.
