Ella

Micro PhD student Ella Lamont (Sherman Lab) was accepted into the TL1 Translational Research Training Program, a one-year mentored research training program in translational science for predoctoral students. Congratulations!

NSF

Congratulations to Edith Sawyer (Meeske Lab) and Billy Ngo (Mougous Lab), who received support from the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program!

Professor Greenberg

As part of the Science in Medicine series, Professor Greenberg will be giving his lecture, “Shedding light on bacterial communication and cooperation”, on April 17th at 11AM in the Orin Smith Auditorium, and over Zoom. RSVPs here are appreciated but not required.

tara young

Tara Young, an undergraduate researcher in the lab of Assistant Professor Monica Guo, won first place in the AAAS 2024 Student E-Poster Competition in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as an Undergraduate presenter. Along with an electronic prize of $500, a year’s digital AAAS membership that includes a digital subscription to the journal of science, and a certificate, she will be recognized in an ad in the April 19 issue of Science.

Professor Ferric Fang

Professor Fang was interviewed for ASM's Meet the Microbiologist Podcast to discuss his recent book "Thinking About Science: Good Science, Bad Science, and How to Make it Better". Dr. Fang was interviewed alongside his co-author, Dr. Arturo Casadevall.

Joseph Mougous

On 6/13/23, UW Medicine launched the Microbial Interactions & Microbiome Center to catalyze research in the Pacific Northwest focused on microbial communities. The new center, led by Dr. Joseph Mougous, the Lynn M. and Michael D. Garvey Endowed Chair in Gastroenterology, Professor of Microbiology and Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at UW, will bring together scientists from diverse disciplines to study how microbes interact with each other and with their hosts, as well as the functional importance of microbiomes in the environment and in human health and disease.”

UW Medicine launches a new center to study microbiomes

Today UW Medicine launched the Microbial Interactions & Microbiome Center to investigate the diverse communities of microorganisms that inhabit nearly every environment, including parts of our bodies like the gut, mouth, and skin. Among the center’s overarching goals are exploring the science behind these dynamic communities of bacteria, fungi, and other microscopic lifeforms, as well as the effects of microbiomes on human health and ecosystem function.

Pavithra Prabhu

"My time at the UW has provided me with ample opportunity to explore different facets of healthcare and its intersection with research, business, public policy, global health and community engagement. I am interested in how these various disciplines not only affect the health of underserved and marginalized communities, but also how they can be harnessed to improve it."
